A dryer that trips its circuit breaker — either immediately on start or after running for a short time — is drawing more current than the circuit is rated for. The most common cause is a failing drive motor that draws excess current as its windings fail. A shorted heating element is the second most common cause. A failing breaker (that trips at normal current) is also possible.
Common causes
Failing drive motor (most common)
As a dryer motor's windings deteriorate, its electrical resistance decreases and it draws increasing current from the circuit. Eventually the current draw exceeds the breaker's rating and the breaker trips. A motor failure often appears gradually — the dryer may run for 10–20 minutes before tripping, with the interval shortening as the motor deteriorates.
Shorted heating element
A heating element wire that has grounded to the heating housing creates a partial short circuit that draws excess current. This often produces sparking, a burning smell, or a discolored heating chamber before the breaker trips.
Shorted drive motor capacitor
Some dryer motor designs use a start capacitor. A shorted capacitor draws heavy surge current on every start attempt, tripping the breaker immediately or within the first few seconds of each start.
Worn power cord or terminal block connection
A power cord or terminal block connection with damaged insulation can create an intermittent short that trips the breaker under load.
Aging or undersized circuit breaker
A 30-amp double-pole breaker that has been tripped many times can develop a lower effective trip point over years of use. If the dryer itself tests as drawing normal current, the breaker may need replacement.
Immediate vs. delayed breaker tripping — what it indicates
A breaker that trips immediately when the dryer starts (within seconds) indicates a hard short or a capacitor fault. A breaker that trips after several minutes of operation typically indicates a motor drawing increasing current as it heats up (classic motor winding failure pattern), or a heating element that shorts to ground once it reaches operating temperature. The timing is diagnostically useful and should be noted when scheduling service.
Can I fix this myself?
Note when in the cycle the breaker trips (immediately on start, or after N minutes of running) — this information helps narrow the diagnosis significantly. Do not repeatedly reset and run the dryer if it continues to trip — repeated tripping on a shorted element can damage wiring.
Breaker tripping indicates an electrical fault drawing unsafe current levels. Do not bypass or replace the breaker with a higher-rated one. Do not continue operating the dryer repeatedly if it keeps tripping — this can damage internal wiring or create fire conditions. Is a dryer worth repairing if it trips the breaker?
Depends on the cause. A shorted heating element is an inexpensive repair. A failing motor is a more significant repair — the decision depends on dryer age and overall condition.
A shorted element repair runs $150–$350. A motor replacement runs $250–$500 depending on the brand. For a dryer under eight years old in otherwise good condition, motor replacement is still economically rational. For an older unit with multiple wear indicators, replacement may be the better choice.
