Dryer noises are almost always mechanical — worn or failing components in the drum support or drive assembly. A high-pitched squeal throughout the cycle is almost always a failing idler pulley bearing. A rhythmic thumping at drum speed is almost always worn drum support rollers. A scraping sound is a worn front glide strip or drum seal. A grinding sound is typically a rear drum bearing or motor bearing.

Common causes

Worn idler pulley bearing (squealing)

The idler pulley maintains tension on the drive belt throughout the cycle. Its bearing wears progressively, first producing a high-pitched squeal at all drum speeds. The bearing eventually seizes completely, at which point the belt can no longer move and the drum stops turning. Most idler pulley failures are preceded by weeks or months of squeal.

Worn drum support rollers (thumping)

Drum rollers support the drum as it rotates. As their bearings wear, they develop flat spots or bearing play that produces a rhythmic thumping sound correlated exactly with drum rotation speed. The thumping typically worsens with load weight.

Worn drum glide strips or front bearing (scraping)

Front-load dryers use plastic drum glides or a felt seal at the front bulkhead to support the drum rim as it rotates. When these wear through, the metal drum rim contacts the metal cabinet front, producing a persistent scraping sound throughout the cycle.

Worn drive belt (slapping, squeaking)

A drive belt that has glazed, cracked, or stretched to the point of irregular tension produces intermittent slapping, squeaking, or snapping sounds. This is usually a precursor to belt breakage.

Rear drum bearing or motor bearing (grinding)

The rear drum shaft rides in a bearing that can wear to produce a grinding, metallic sound that increases with load and worsens progressively. A motor bearing failure produces a similar sound with a characteristic pitch.

Loose object or debris in drum (rattling, clunking)

Coins, small hardware, or other objects trapped between the drum and the front or rear panel produce irregular clunking or rattling sounds. Check the drum interior for visible items and the gap between the drum lip and the front panel.

Using the sound to identify the failing component

The three most useful questions for identifying a dryer noise are: (1) Is the sound continuous or rhythmic? A continuous squeal is the idler pulley; a rhythmic thump is the drum rollers. (2) Does the sound increase with load weight? Bearing failures worsen under load; belt slap does not. (3) Where does the sound seem to originate? Front scraping is the glide strips; rear grinding is the drum or motor bearing. Running the dryer empty for two minutes and listening to which sounds persist or disappear can help isolate drum-support noise from drive noise.

Can I fix this myself?

Inspecting the drum interior for foreign objects is safe and should be done before scheduling service. Checking for items caught between the drum lip and the front panel opening is also accessible without tools on most models.

Accessing the idler pulley, drum rollers, glides, and belt requires disassembling the front or rear cabinet panels. Drum rollers on front-load models require lifting the drum out of the cabinet — a heavy component on an awkward axis. Rear bearing access requires disassembling the rear panel or full drum removal depending on the model. Professional service prevents damage to heating element brackets, wiring, and moisture sensors during reassembly.

Is a noisy dryer worth repairing?
