A dryer that powers on — motor hums, timer advances — but whose drum won't turn has almost certainly broken its drive belt. Less commonly, a seized idler pulley or worn drum rollers prevent the belt from transmitting rotation. In either case, the drum motor remains functional and the repair is a mechanical component replacement completed in one visit.
Common causes
Broken drive belt
The drive belt is the most common cause of a non-spinning drum across all dryer brands. It is a long, flat or ribbed belt that wraps around the entire drum circumference, the idler pulley, and the motor shaft pulley. When it breaks, the motor runs freely without load and the drum sits motionless. The diagnostic confirmation: the drum spins freely by hand with essentially no resistance.
Failed idler pulley
The idler pulley maintains tension on the drive belt. It is spring-loaded or pivot-mounted to keep the belt taut as the drum rotates. When the idler bearing seizes or the pulley bracket breaks, the belt goes slack and the drum stops turning. A failing idler typically produces an escalating squeal in the days or weeks before complete failure.
Worn or seized drum support rollers
Drum rollers support the drum from the front, rear, or both, depending on the model. When roller bearings wear or seize, they increase the rotational resistance on the drum until the motor can no longer turn it through the belt. This condition typically produces a thumping or grinding noise before the drum stops entirely.
Failed drive motor
Less common. A drive motor that fails to develop starting torque — or whose start switch fails — produces a humming sound without drum rotation. This differs from a broken belt: a failed motor produces resistance on hand spin rather than free rotation.
Broken motor coupler (direct-drive models)
Some models (particularly certain Whirlpool top-load designs) use a direct motor-to-basket drive with a plastic coupling rather than a belt. A broken coupler produces the same symptom as a broken belt but requires a different repair.
Broken belt vs. seized roller — how to tell the difference
The key diagnostic test is a manual hand spin of the drum: (1) Disconnect the dryer from power. (2) Open the dryer door. (3) Attempt to turn the drum by hand. If the drum spins freely with little to no resistance — a broken drive belt is almost certainly the cause. If the drum is difficult to turn or produces grinding resistance — the cause is a seized roller, seized idler pulley, or a motor problem rather than a belt failure. Knowing which condition is present before scheduling service allows for a more targeted repair.
Can I fix this myself?
The broken belt hand-spin test above is safe to perform before calling for service. On some older top-load dryer models, the belt is accessible through a front access panel and can be replaced by experienced home repair people. On all front-load models, belt access requires removing the front panel and drum, which involves lifting a heavy component and routing the new belt around the drum circumference — a two-person job.
Drum roller, idler pulley, and bearing replacement requires disassembling the dryer to a degree that involves electrical connections and in some models heating element housing. Gas dryer disassembly requires care around the gas inlet connection. Professional service avoids damage to heating element brackets, wiring harnesses, and moisture sensor components during reassembly.
Is it worth repairing a dryer that won't spin?
Almost always yes. Drive belt, idler pulley, and drum roller repairs are among the least expensive dryer service calls — typically $100–$280. The motor and drum are the expensive, long-lived components and remain functional.
A drive belt replacement extends a dryer's useful life by many years. Replacing a functional dryer for a broken belt is rarely the economical choice unless the unit is very old or has multiple concurrent failures.
