A dryer that requires two or more cycles to dry a normal load is almost always experiencing restricted airflow from a partially clogged vent run. Less commonly, a partially failed heating element produces reduced heat output. Restricted airflow is also the direct precursor to complete no-heat failure — when the restriction gets severe enough, the thermal fuse blows.
Common causes
Partial vent restriction (most common)
A partially clogged vent run is the cause of slow drying in the large majority of cases across all brands. Lint accumulates in the vent pipe over time, reducing airflow progressively. The dryer runs at normal temperature but cannot exhaust moist air efficiently enough to dry clothes in a single cycle. As the restriction worsens, drying time extends further until eventually the thermal fuse blows and heat stops entirely.
Partially failed heating element
An electric heating element with a partial break in the resistance wire produces heat at reduced output. The dryer gets warm but does not reach full operating temperature, extending dry times significantly. This condition is distinct from a fully failed element and requires the element be tested for correct resistance rather than simply for continuity.
Failing cycling thermostat
A cycling thermostat that opens below its specification temperature — common in aging units — reduces the proportion of each cycle during which heat is active, lowering the effective average drum temperature and extending dry times.
Moisture sensor bar coating
On dryers with sensor-dry systems (LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, GE Profile), two metal sensor bars inside the drum detect electrical conductivity between wet clothes. Fabric softener residue insulates these bars over time, causing false 'dry' readings that end the cycle before clothes are actually dry. Cleaning the bars with isopropyl alcohol often resolves sensor-related premature cycle endings.
Blocked exterior vent termination
The exterior vent cap flap can become blocked by lint accumulation, bird nesting, or debris. A blocked cap reduces airflow to the same effect as a clogged vent pipe. The cap flap should open freely and visibly when the dryer is running.
Wrong dryer settings
Automatic (sensor-dry) cycles end when the sensor reads dry rather than after a fixed time. If the sensor bars are coated or the load is very small, the cycle can end sooner than expected. Using a timed dry at high heat is an effective confirmation test: if clothes dry normally on timed heat, the sensor system is the issue.
How long should a dryer cycle take?
A normal dryer cycle for a full load of medium-weight laundry runs 45–60 minutes at medium-high heat. A cycle significantly exceeding 60 minutes, or requiring two runs to dry a single load, indicates a problem worth diagnosing.
Dry time varies by load weight, fabric type, and spin speed from the washer — a high-spin washer extracts significantly more water than a low-spin cycle, reducing dryer time. A normal full load of cotton should dry in one 45–60 minute cycle on medium or high heat. Any consistent need for a second cycle is a diagnostic indicator.
Slow drying as a fire risk indicator
Progressive vent restriction — the cause of most slow-drying complaints — accumulates lint in the vent run. Dryer vent fires are initiated when accumulated lint in a restricted vent run reaches ignition temperature. The CPSC and NFPA have documented dryer fires as a significant residential fire cause. A dryer that has gradually required longer dry times over months should have the vent path inspected and cleaned.
Can I fix this myself?
The most accessible DIY check: locate the exterior vent termination and observe whether the flap opens visibly when the dryer runs. A flap that doesn't open or opens only partially indicates a blocked termination or vent path. For relatively short straight vent runs (under 8 feet), a consumer-grade dryer vent cleaning kit can clear accessible lint accumulation. Clean the lint trap before every load.
Long or complex vent runs, roof-vented configurations, and vent runs with multiple elbows are not well served by consumer cleaning kits, which reach only the nearest accessible section. Professional vent inspection uses a blower measurement to confirm actual airflow at both ends of the run.
Is a slow-drying dryer worth repairing?
Slow-dry repairs are almost always the most cost-effective dryer service category. Vent clearing, sensor bar cleaning, or a thermostat/element replacement run $100–$350 — far below replacement cost.
Ignoring slow drying leads to progressive component wear (thermal fuse, element stress) and eventually a no-heat failure that requires a more expensive repair. Addressing the slow-dry root cause promptly is the more economical approach.
When to schedule a repair
Schedule service if the exterior vent check and sensor bar cleaning don't resolve slow drying, if the dryer requires three or more cycles per load, if the dryer is tripping the thermal fuse repeatedly, or if flow-sense error codes appear on LG models.
