A dryer that tumbles normally but produces no heat has almost certainly blown its thermal fuse, lost its heating element, or has a thermostat that has failed in the open position — all of which interrupt the heating circuit while leaving the motor running. In most cases the repair is a single component replacement completed the same day. The most commonly overlooked cause is a clogged dryer vent, which causes the dryer to overheat until a safety fuse blows.

Common causes

Blown thermal fuse

A one-trip safety device that permanently cuts the heating circuit when the dryer overheats. Once blown it cannot reset — it must be replaced, and the underlying cause (almost always a clogged vent run) must be corrected, or the new fuse blows again within weeks or months.

Failed heating element (electric dryers)

The 240V resistance coil inside the heating chamber burns out over time. When it fails, the drum spins and the motor runs normally, but no heat is produced. A typical electric dryer element lasts 8–12 years under normal vent conditions; dryers with restricted vents see shorter element life due to elevated operating temperatures.

Failed cycling thermostat

The cycling thermostat opens and closes throughout the cycle to regulate heat output. When it fails open — stuck in the off position — the heat circuit remains open continuously and no heat is produced.

Failed high-limit thermostat

The high-limit thermostat is a safety device that opens the heat circuit when drum temperature exceeds a safe threshold. A high-limit that fails permanently open cuts all heat.

Clogged dryer vent (root cause)

Restricted airflow forces the dryer to retain heat it cannot exhaust, overheating the thermal fuse or tripping thermostats. The clogged vent is the root cause behind the majority of no-heat calls on all brands. Fixing the fuse without clearing the vent is a temporary measure.

Failed igniter or gas valve coils (gas dryers)

Gas dryers rely on an igniter to heat up and trip the gas valve coils open. A worn igniter produces the 'briefly lights then goes cold' pattern; a failed gas valve coil produces no ignition attempt. Both prevent heat production.

Faulty thermistor (sensor-equipped brands)

LG and Samsung use NTC thermistors for temperature sensing. A drifting thermistor reports incorrect temperatures to the control board, which responds by cutting heat even when the dryer has not reached the target temperature.

Most homeowners find it confusing that a dryer can run a complete cycle — tumbling, advancing the timer, even getting somewhat warm — with a completely failed heating circuit. The explanation is that the drum motor and the heating element (or gas burner) operate on entirely separate electrical circuits. The motor circuit is protected by the main circuit breaker. The heating circuit is additionally protected by a thermal fuse, thermostats, and (on gas models) a gas valve interlocking sequence.

On a 240V electric dryer, the motor runs on 120V (one leg of the circuit) while the heating element requires both legs (full 240V). A single-leg failure at the breaker panel — a partially tripped 240V breaker — can leave the motor running normally while providing zero power to the heating element. This is worth checking before scheduling a service call: at the breaker panel, turn the dryer breaker fully off and then fully on.

Can I fix this myself?

On some dryers, a tripped circuit breaker (partially tripped 240V breakers are common) can be corrected by cycling the breaker — turn fully off, then fully on.

Beyond lint trap cleaning, exterior vent cap inspection, and circuit breaker cycling, no-heat repairs involve live 240V electrical components or natural gas plumbing and are not appropriate DIY repairs. Testing thermal fuses and heating elements requires a multimeter and knowledge of safe test point locations. Gas dryer burner assembly work involves fuel connections that require leak testing after any service.

Should I repair or replace a dryer that won't heat?

For a dryer under approximately ten years old in otherwise good condition, repair is almost always the economical choice. A no-heat repair is typically a single component — thermal fuse, heating element, thermostat, or igniter — costing a fraction of replacement.

The typical dryer no-heat repair runs $150–$400 all-in, compared to $700–$1,400 for a comparable new dryer. The drum, motor, and cabinet — the expensive, long-lived components — are unaffected by a heating circuit failure.
