Why is my GE dryer not heating?
A GE dryer that runs normally but produces no heat has most likely blown its thermal cutoff (GE's equivalent of a thermal fuse), failed its heating element, or has a thermostat stuck in the open position. On GE gas models, a failed igniter or radiant sensor is the common cause. The underlying root cause in most cases is a restricted vent that caused the dryer to overheat.

Blown thermal cutoff
GE uses a thermal cutoff (also called a thermal fuse) that opens permanently when the dryer exceeds safe temperatures. The cause is almost always restricted airflow. It must be replaced, and the vent must be cleared.

Failed heating element
GE's electric heating element is a single 240V resistance coil. It fails by developing a break in the resistance wire, which is confirmed by continuity testing. GE elements are widely available and relatively inexpensive.

Failed cycling or high-limit thermostat
GE's thermostats regulate heat output. A cycling thermostat that fails open produces no heat; a high-limit thermostat that fails open does the same. Both are tested during diagnosis.

Failed igniter or radiant sensor (gas models)
GE gas dryers use an igniter and radiant sensor sequence. A failed radiant sensor prevents the gas valve from opening even when the igniter is working correctly.

Clogged vent
The root cause of most GE thermal cutoff failures. Clearing the vent is part of every GE no-heat repair.
How a GE no-heat dryer is diagnosed
Diagnosis tests the heating element continuity, checks the thermal cutoff and both thermostats, verifies vent airflow, and on gas models tests the igniter resistance and radiant sensor. GE Profile models with sensor-dry are also tested for moisture sensor bar coating, which can cause premature cycle termination that appears similar to a heating problem.

GE electric dryers operate at 240V. Internal heating circuit components are accessed only after unplugging the dryer and following the correct disassembly sequence for the specific model. GE gas dryer service requires appropriate gas connection leak testing after any service to the burner assembly.
Is a GE dryer worth repairing if it won't heat?
For GE dryers under approximately 12–14 years old, repair is generally the economical choice. GE heating components are widely available and moderately priced. A no-heat repair typically runs $150–$400, compared to $650–$1,000 for an equivalent new GE dryer.
