A dryer that shows absolutely no sign of power — no display, no lights, no sounds — has a complete power supply failure upstream of the control board. The most common cause is a tripped circuit breaker. A failed power cord or a failed control board PSU are the other likely causes. This is distinct from a dryer that powers on but won't start — that indicates a different set of components.
Common causes
Tripped circuit breaker (most common first check)
Electric dryers use a 240V/30A dedicated circuit with a double-pole breaker. 240V breakers can trip partially — one pole trips while the other remains on — producing a condition where no power reaches the dryer at all. The breaker handle may not visually indicate tripped. The correct check: at the panel, push the breaker firmly to the full off position, then back to on.
Failed power cord
The dryer power cord connects the appliance to the outlet. Cords can fail at the plug end (damaged prongs, loose connection) or at the terminal block end inside the dryer. A failed cord provides no power to the dryer.
Failed outlet or receptacle
The 240V dryer outlet can fail — contacts wear over time, particularly on outlets that are 20+ years old. Testing with a multimeter or by plugging in a known-working appliance confirms outlet function.
Control board power supply fault
The control board's internal power supply regulates voltage for the electronics. A failed PSU produces a completely unresponsive display even with power present at the terminal block.
Failed terminal block connection
The terminal block inside the dryer where the power cord connects can develop loose or corroded connections over time. An intermittent or failed connection produces no power to the dryer.
Can I fix this myself?
Before calling for service: (1) At the electrical panel, locate the dryer breaker. Push it firmly to the full OFF position — you should feel a definite click. Wait 30 seconds. Then push it firmly to the full ON position. (2) Inspect the power cord at the outlet for any visible damage, loose prongs, or signs of heat damage. (3) Check that the outlet is providing power (this can be tested with a non-contact voltage tester, available at hardware stores for under $20).
Terminal block inspection and internal power supply diagnosis require the dryer to be disconnected from power and the rear panel removed. 240V electrical connections at the terminal block are dangerous if probed with power applied. Do not attempt internal power supply testing without proper equipment and training.
Is a dryer that won't turn on worth repairing?
Usually yes, unless the control board has catastrophically failed on a unit over ten years old. Power cord, terminal block, and breaker issues are inexpensive to correct. Control board PSU replacement is moderate cost but still less than a new dryer.
Power cord replacement runs $50–$120. Terminal block repair runs $100–$200. Control board replacement runs $200–$450 depending on the brand.
When to schedule a repair
If cycling the breaker and inspecting the power cord don't restore operation, the fault is internal to the dryer or at the outlet wiring level — professional diagnosis is required.
