Why won't my Whirlpool dryer start?

A Whirlpool dryer that won't start most often has a failed door switch, a blown thermal fuse (which interrupts the control circuit on most Whirlpool models), or a failed start switch. A completely dark display or no indicator lights points to a power supply issue.

  • 01

    Failed door switch

The door switch is the most common single cause. It must signal the control board that the door is closed before operation is allowed. Whirlpool models often use a dual-contact switch that can fail in one position while appearing to click normally.

  • 02

    Blown thermal fuse

Whirlpool thermal fuses are wired in series with the control circuit on many models. A blown fuse prevents any start operation, not just heat.

  • 03

    Failed start switch or timer

On older electromechanical Whirlpool models, the timer or push-start switch itself can fail. On newer electronic models, the start button's membrane contacts can deteriorate.

  • 04

    Control board failure

Electronic Whirlpool models (Duet, newer Cabrio) use a main PCB. Board failure typically produces no panel response.

  • 05

    Power supply issue

A tripped breaker, loose terminal connection, or failed power cord can prevent operation entirely.

How a Whirlpool no-start is diagnosed

Diagnosis confirms power supply, tests the door switch continuity in both the open and closed positions, checks the thermal fuse, and tests the start switch. Whirlpool's straightforward mechanical design makes most no-start diagnoses fast and unambiguous.

Safety and Whirlpool no-start repairs

Whirlpool electric dryers operate at 240V. All internal diagnosis requires the dryer to be disconnected from its power source. Terminal block connections should not be probed with the circuit energized.

Is a Whirlpool dryer worth repairing if it won't start?

For units under 12 years old, yes in most cases. Door switch and thermal fuse repairs are inexpensive ($100–$200). Whirlpool control boards are less expensive than LG or Samsung equivalents.
