Why won't my Whirlpool dryer spin?
A Whirlpool dryer that runs but doesn't spin has almost certainly broken its drive belt. The belt wraps around the entire drum, an idler pulley, and the motor shaft. When it breaks, the motor runs but the drum sits still. The diagnostic confirmation: the drum spins freely by hand with no resistance.
- 01
Broken drive belt
The most common cause. Whirlpool's belt is a long, ribbed band. It develops cracks over years of use and eventually breaks. Motor runs; drum does not turn; drum spins freely by hand.
- 02
Failed idler pulley
The spring-loaded idler pulley maintains belt tension. If the idler bracket breaks or the bearing seizes, the belt goes slack and the drum stops. A failing idler usually produces squealing before complete failure.
- 03
Worn drum support rollers
Whirlpool dryers use two rear drum rollers (and in some models front rollers). Seized rollers prevent rotation and typically produce noise before the drum stops entirely.
- 04
Failed motor
Less common. A motor that cannot develop sufficient starting torque will hum but not turn the drum. A failed start switch on the motor produces the same symptom.
How Whirlpool non-spinning is diagnosed
A hand spin test of the drum confirms whether the belt has broken (free spin) or the resistance is from a seized roller or bearing. Belt condition, idler assembly, and roller bearings are checked with the cabinet open. Whirlpool's design provides relatively good access to these components.
Can I replace a Whirlpool drive belt myself?
Whirlpool top-load dryer belt replacement is within DIY scope for experienced home repair people — access is more straightforward than LG or Samsung front-load designs. Front-load Whirlpool Duet belt replacement is more involved and requires full front bulkhead removal. Professional service avoids damage to the heating element, electrical connections, or moisture sensors during reassembly.
Is a non-spinning Whirlpool worth repairing?
A Whirlpool belt, idler, or roller repair is among the least expensive dryer repairs — typically $100–$250. The drum and motor are the high-value components and remain functional.
