What is causing noise in my Whirlpool dryer?
Whirlpool dryer noises are almost always mechanical: a high-pitched squeal is a failing idler pulley; a rhythmic thumping at drum speed is worn drum rollers; a scraping sound is a worn front glide strip or felt seal; a grinding sound is a drum bearing or motor bearing issue.

Worn idler pulley
The idler pulley bearing wears to produce a continuous squeal throughout the cycle. It progresses to seizure and then belt failure if not replaced.

Worn drum support rollers
Whirlpool uses two rear support rollers. Worn roller bearings produce a rhythmic thumping correlated with drum rotation. In some models a thumping sound is also produced by a worn rear drum seal.

Worn front drum glide strips
Whirlpool front-load models use plastic drum glides on the front bulkhead. As they wear through, the metal drum rim contacts the metal cabinet, producing a scraping sound.

Worn drum felt seal
The felt seal around the drum opening prevents air bypass. When the felt wears, it can allow the drum to contact the front panel and produce a scraping or rubbing sound.

Drive belt slapping
A stretched or partially frayed belt can produce intermittent slapping sounds before breaking.
How Whirlpool dryer noise is diagnosed
Front and rear cabinet panels are removed to observe the drum assembly in operation. The idler pulley, rollers, glides, and belt are inspected by touch and visually for wear, roughness, and play. Whirlpool's design provides good internal access compared to front-load European designs.
