A dryer that stops before the cycle completes — drum stops, heat cuts off, or both — is almost always overheating from a restricted vent. The high-limit thermostat or safety thermostat cuts the heat and/or motor when internal temperature exceeds the safe threshold. On sensor-dry models, a moisture sensor bar coated with fabric softener residue can also signal a 'dry' condition prematurely, ending the cycle before clothes are dry.
Common causes
Overheating from vent restriction (most common)
A restricted vent forces the dryer to retain heat. When internal temperature exceeds the high-limit thermostat's trip point, it cuts the heat circuit. If temperatures continue to rise, a safety thermostat further down the safety chain may cut the motor entirely. This is the most common cause of a mid-cycle stop.
Moisture sensor bar coating (sensor-dry models)
On dryers with automatic sensor-dry cycles, fabric softener residue on the moisture sensor bars causes the sensor to read 'dry' before the load is actually dry. The cycle ends — sometimes within 15–20 minutes of starting — and clothes remain damp.
Failed cycling thermostat
A cycling thermostat that fails open permanently cuts the heat mid-cycle. The drum may continue to turn but without heat, leaving clothes unfinished. Depending on the model's safety logic, a sustained heat-off condition may also trigger a motor stop.
Control board fault
Less commonly, an intermittent control board fault can halt an otherwise normal cycle. Board faults are more common on electronic-control models after power surges.
Overloaded or unbalanced drum
A heavily overloaded drum that exceeds the motor's rated torque can trigger the motor's internal thermal protection, stopping the motor to prevent damage. The dryer will typically restart after cooling down.
Heat-off stop vs. complete motor stop — what it means
There are two distinct mid-cycle stop patterns: (1) The drum continues to spin but heat stops — indicating a thermostat or heating circuit failure rather than a complete safety shutoff. (2) Both the drum and heat stop completely — indicating the high-limit or safety thermostat cut motor power along with heat, which only occurs at significantly elevated internal temperatures from a vent restriction. Noting which pattern is occurring helps narrow the diagnosis.
Can I fix this myself?
If the dryer stops mid-cycle and then restarts after cooling for 20–30 minutes, this is a characteristic sign of thermal overprotection triggering from vent restriction. Check the exterior vent cap for visible obstruction. On sensor-dry models, clean the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with isopropyl alcohol — this is a safe first step for premature cycle-ending stops.
A dryer that repeatedly overheats until safety thermostats trip is operating in an unsafe condition. Beyond vent cap inspection and sensor bar cleaning, mid-cycle stop diagnosis requires testing the thermostat chain and verifying vent airflow — professional service is appropriate.
