How LG dryers work and where they typically fail
LG dryers use a separate motor circuit and a resistance heating element (electric) or gas burner assembly (gas). The motor and heat source operate independently, which is why a drum can spin normally while the dryer produces no heat. Most LG no-heat calls trace to a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element, or a drifting thermistor.
LG's electric models (the DLEX and DLE series) use a standard resistance heating element rated at 240V. The element is housed in a heating chamber at the back of the drum and is connected in series with a thermal fuse and a pair of thermostats. When the thermal fuse blows — almost always caused by restricted airflow — the heating circuit opens completely and the drum continues to spin normally.
LG gas dryers (DLG series) use an igniter and a set of gas valve coils (holding coils and radiant sense coils) to open the gas valve and sustain combustion. A worn igniter is the most common gas-model failure and typically presents as a dryer that starts up, briefly heats, then goes cold — because the igniter glows enough to open the valve but not enough to hold it open continuously.
LG's thermistor-based temperature sensing (standard on DLEX and DLE models from around 2012 onward) is more precise than simple bimetal thermostats but also more susceptible to failure-related misreadings that trigger premature heat shutoff. A thermistor failure is commonly misdiagnosed as a control board fault.
LG flow-sense codes: d80, d90, d95
LG's flow-sense codes indicate progressively restricted airflow: d80 means roughly 80% of normal airflow is blocked, d95 means the vent is nearly completely blocked. These codes almost always indicate a clogged vent run, a kinked exhaust hose, or a blocked exterior termination.
When flow-sense codes appear, the first diagnostic step is measuring airflow at the dryer exhaust connection and at the exterior termination with an anemometer or flow meter. If airflow is significantly below the 200 CFM minimum LG specifies for its larger models, the restriction must be located and cleared before any other repair is performed — otherwise any replaced component will fail prematurely in the same restricted condition.
LG WashTower and stacked configurations
LG WashTower units (integrated washer-dryer columns) and standard stacked pairs are prevalent in Northern Virginia condominiums and Arlington and Tysons high-rises. The WashTower uses a shared control panel, and access to the dryer's internal components requires specific disassembly that differs substantially from a freestanding unit.
