Why won't my LG dryer drum spin?

An LG dryer that powers on but doesn't spin has almost certainly broken its drive belt. On LG front-load models, the belt is a long narrow band that wraps around the entire drum, the motor shaft pulley, and the idler pulley. When it breaks, the motor runs freely but the drum stays still. A broken belt allows the drum to spin freely by hand with essentially no resistance.

  • 01

    Broken drive belt

The most common cause. LG's front-load belt wraps around the full drum circumference and is subject to gradual wear. When it breaks the motor continues to run but the drum sits motionless. The diagnostic sign: the drum spins freely by hand with no resistance.

  • 02

    Failed idler pulley

The idler pulley maintains drive belt tension. A seized idler bearing prevents the belt from traveling, which stops drum rotation. A failing idler often announces itself with a squealing sound in the weeks before complete failure.

  • 03

    Worn drum support rollers

LG front-load dryers use two rear drum rollers (and in many models front drum glides). When rollers wear and seize, they increase resistance on the drum until the motor can no longer turn it through the belt.

  • 04

    Failed drive motor

Less common. A failed motor or motor start capacitor produces a humming sound with no drum rotation and no belt breakage.

How LG non-spinning drum diagnosis works

Diagnosis begins with a manual drum rotation test to check for free spin (indicating broken belt) vs. resistance (indicating seized roller or bearing). If the belt is intact, the idler pulley, rollers, and glides are inspected. Motor operation is confirmed separately. Front access panel removal is required for LG front-load models.

Can I replace an LG drive belt myself?

LG front-load dryer belt replacement requires disassembling the front panel, front bulkhead, and lifting the drum — a process involving a heavy drum and LG-specific disassembly sequence. Without the correct procedure, the drum can damage the heating element housing or internal wiring. Professional service is appropriate for LG front-load configurations.

Is an LG drum repair worth the cost?

Drive belt, idler pulley, and drum roller replacements are among the least expensive LG repairs — typically $100–$280. The drum and motor remain functional and are the expensive, long-lived components. Replacing an LG dryer for a broken belt is rarely the economical choice.
