Why won't my LG dryer start?

An LG dryer that won't start most often has a failed door switch, a blown thermal fuse (which on LG models interrupts both the heat and motor circuits on many configurations), or a failed control board. A completely dark display indicates a power supply problem — circuit breaker, power cord, or control board PSU fault.

  • 01

    Failed door switch

The door switch is the most common single cause. It signals the control board that the door is securely latched. On LG front-load models, the door switch is integrated with the door latch assembly and can fail in the mechanical latch or the electronic switch component.

  • 02

    Blown thermal fuse

LG's thermal fuse is wired in series with the control circuit on most models. A blown thermal fuse cuts not just the heat but also prevents any start operation.

  • 03

Failed start button or control panel

The start button's internal contacts wear over time. LG's touch-panel control interface can also fail — particularly on the DLE front-panel versions — when the capacitive touch layer deteriorates.

  • 04

    Control board failure

LG's main PCB control board can fail from power surges, moisture exposure, or component age. A failed board typically produces no response to any input.

  • 05

    Power supply issue

LG electric dryers require a 240V/30A dedicated circuit. A tripped breaker or loose connection at the dryer's terminal block prevents operation entirely.

How an LG no-start is diagnosed

Diagnosis confirms power supply at the outlet and terminal block, tests the door latch switch for correct continuity in both positions, checks the thermal fuse, tests the start control components, and on suspected board failures verifies input/output voltages. LG's smart diagnostics feature on some models can transmit fault codes to the LG SmartDiagnosis app.

Safety note for LG no-start diagnosis

LG dryer no-start diagnosis involves live voltage testing at 240V. All internal testing requires confirmation of circuit isolation before probing terminals. Do not attempt internal diagnosis without disconnecting the dryer from its power source.

Is an LG dryer worth repairing if it won't start?

For units under ten years old, yes in most cases. Door switch and thermal fuse repairs are inexpensive ($100–$200). Control board replacement is more expensive ($250–$450 for LG boards) but still generally less than a replacement dryer.
