Why is my Maytag dryer not heating?
A Maytag dryer that tumbles but produces no heat has most likely blown its thermal cutoff fuse (almost always from restricted airflow), lost its heating element, or has a cycling thermostat that has failed in the open position. On Maytag gas dryers, a worn igniter is the most common cause of no heat.
- 01
Blown thermal cutoff fuse
A one-trip safety device that opens permanently when the dryer overheats. Vent restriction is the root cause in the large majority of cases. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent produces recurrence.
- 02
Failed heating element
Maytag electric elements are identical to Whirlpool platform equivalents. They fail by breaking the resistance wire, confirmed by continuity testing. Typical service life is 8–12 years.
- 03
Failed cycling thermostat
The cycling thermostat regulates heat output throughout the cycle. When it fails open, the heat circuit stays open and no heat is produced.
- 04
Worn gas igniter (gas models)
Maytag gas dryers use the same Whirlpool-platform igniter. A worn igniter produces the 'brief heat then cold' pattern characteristic of this failure mode.
- 05
Clogged dryer vent
Vent restriction is the most common underlying cause of Maytag thermal fuse failure. The vent path is cleared as part of every Maytag no-heat repair.
How a Maytag no-heat dryer is diagnosed
Diagnosis tests the element for continuity, checks the thermal cutoff and thermostats, verifies airflow at the vent termination, and on gas models confirms ignition. Maytag's Whirlpool-platform design makes diagnosis fast and parts are readily available for same-visit repair in most cases.
Safety and Maytag no-heat repairs
Maytag electric dryers operate at 240V. All internal work requires the dryer to be disconnected from power. Gas Maytag dryers require appropriate gas leak testing after any burner assembly service.
Is a Maytag dryer worth repairing if it won't heat?
Yes, for units under approximately 12 years old. Maytag heating components are among the most affordable to replace due to Whirlpool platform parts pricing. A typical Maytag no-heat repair runs $130–$380.
