What is causing noise in my GE dryer?
GE dryer noises are mechanical: squealing is typically an idler pulley bearing; rhythmic thumping is worn drum rollers; grinding is often the rear drum bearing, which is more commonly replaced on GE models than on some other brands; scraping is a worn drum glide or felt seal.

Rear drum bearing failure
GE uses a sleeve bearing at the rear drum shaft on many models. This bearing is more prone to wear-related noise than the sealed roller bearings used on some other brands. A grinding or metallic sound that increases with load is the indicator.

How GE dryer noise is diagnosed
Cabinet panels are removed to observe the drum assembly in operation and isolate the noise by location. GE's rear bearing is accessed from the rear panel.
