Dryer Repair vs. Replace: How to Decide

The standard guidance is the 50% rule: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of what a comparable new dryer costs, replacement is worth considering. For most dryers, most repairs fall well below that threshold. A new mid-range dryer costs $600–$1,000. Most dryer repairs run $150–$350. The math almost always favors repair — especially for dryers under 10 years old in otherwise good condition.

The 50% rule, explained

Appliance industry guidance has long used the 50% rule as a repair-vs-replace threshold: if the cost to repair an appliance exceeds 50% of the cost to replace it with a comparable new model, replacement starts to make sense. Below that threshold, repair is almost always the better economic choice.

For dryers, the math works heavily in favor of repair. A solid mid-range replacement dryer — say a Whirlpool WED5000D or Samsung DVE45T6000 — runs $650–$900 retail, plus delivery, installation, and haul-away (add $50–$150). That puts the all-in replacement cost at $700–$1,050. The 50% threshold is therefore $350–$525. Most dryer repairs — thermal fuses, heating elements, belts, rollers, thermistors — run $120–$280. You'd need a control board replacement or motor replacement on a specific model to approach the 50% line.

How age and condition change the math

The 50% rule is a starting point, not the full answer. Age and overall condition matter. A 5-year-old LG front-loader with a failed thermistor is almost certainly worth the $150 repair — it has 8–10 more years of reliable life. A 14-year-old Samsung DV series with a failed control board and a drum bearing starting to go deserves more scrutiny.

A useful rule of thumb for age: dryers have a median service life of about 13 years. If your dryer is under 8 years old, repair almost always wins. Between 8–12 years, weigh repair cost against condition and expected remaining life. Over 12 years, a single expensive repair (control board, motor) may not be the right call — but simple mechanical repairs (belt, rollers, thermal fuse) are still economical even on an older machine.

Condition questions to ask: Is the drum in good shape? Does the cabinet have rust or structural damage? Have multiple systems failed recently, or just one? A dryer with a solid drum and cabinet, good mechanical condition, and one failed electrical component is a good repair candidate regardless of age.

Repairs that almost always make economic sense

These repairs are economical on nearly any dryer in otherwise good condition:

Thermal fuse — $120–$180. A $15 part; labor to access and replace it. Always worth it.
Drive belt — $120–$200. Standard wear item; expected at 7–12 years.
Drum rollers & idler pulley — $130–$220. Pure mechanical wear; fixes noise and drum drag.
Door switch — $100–$160. One of the simplest repairs; always economical.
Gas valve coil set / igniter — $140–$230. Common on Whirlpool/Maytag gas dryers; always worth fixing.
Moisture sensor bars — $110–$180. Cheap part; quick fix; well below any replacement threshold.
Heating element (electric) — $150–$250. Straightforward, well-documented repair.
Thermistor / cycling thermostat — $115–$175. Standard repair on LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool.

Repairs that warrant repair-vs-replace analysis

Control board replacement ($220–$400) on a 10+ year old dryer: weigh cost against likely remaining service life. LG and Samsung boards run on the higher end; Whirlpool boards are more affordable. A $250 board repair on an 11-year-old Whirlpool in good condition is still probably right. A $380 Samsung control board on a 13-year-old unit with other wear showing deserves honest scrutiny.

Motor replacement ($200–$380): motors last a long time, so motor failure on a relatively young dryer (under 10 years) is unusual and almost certainly worth repairing. On a 14+ year old dryer, get a complete mechanical assessment before committing to a motor replacement.

Brand-specific considerations

Not all dryers have the same long-term repair economics. Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore (Whirlpool platform), and Amana dryers have the most favorable repair economics — OEM and aftermarket parts are widely available, inexpensive, and well-documented. These machines frequently reach 15+ years with only routine repairs.

LG and Samsung dryers use more proprietary electronics. Control board and thermistor costs run higher. But both brands are mechanically well-engineered, and their drum assemblies last well. Mechanical repairs on LG and Samsung are still very economical — it's the electronics that shift the math on older machines.

Bosch heat-pump and condensation dryers have higher repair costs due to fewer available technicians and more expensive components, but they're engineered to last 15+ years and are genuinely worth repairing.
