How to Prevent Dryer Fires

The U.S. Fire Administration reports approximately 15,000 dryer fires annually — and the overwhelming majority are preventable. The leading cause is lint buildup in the exhaust vent system. Regular lint trap cleaning, annual duct cleaning, and proper vent installation eliminate the vast majority of fire risk. If your dryer is taking longer to dry, running unusually hot, or has never had the duct cleaned, address it now.

Why dryers catch fire (and why it's preventable)

Lint is highly flammable — it's essentially fine, dry cellulose fiber with enormous surface area. A dryer exhaust system that moves 100+ cubic feet of warm, humid air per minute will accumulate lint in the duct run over time, no matter how diligently you clean the lint trap. As that lint accumulates, airflow restricts, heat builds up, and temperatures in the duct can reach ignition point.

The sequence: restricted vent → heat buildup → elevated duct temperatures → ignition of accumulated lint. The fire can spread rapidly through the wall cavity and into the home structure before it's visible or detected.

The good news: this failure mode has a long warning period. Reduced airflow, longer dry times, hot exhaust, and a hot laundry room are all warning signs that appear weeks or months before a fire-risk condition develops. If you catch them, you prevent the fire.

Maintenance step 1: Clean the lint trap — every single load

Clean the lint screen before every load, not just when it looks full. A partially clogged screen reduces airflow even when it looks mostly clear. Pull it straight out, peel off the lint, and reinstall.

Every 3–6 months: wash the lint screen with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Dryer sheets and fabric softener leave a waxy film on the screen that's invisible but significantly reduces airflow. You can test for film by holding the screen under running water — water should flow freely through; if it beads up or runs off, the screen needs washing.

Periodically: clean inside the lint trap housing. Use a long, flexible lint brush to reach down into the housing below the screen. Significant lint accumulates there and is never caught by normal screen cleaning.

Maintenance step 2: Inspect and clean the duct run

The flexible duct (the accordion hose behind the dryer) should be inspected annually. Look for kinks, tears, or crushing — a kinked duct significantly restricts airflow and creates a lint collection point. The flex section should be 4-inch diameter, as short as possible (under 6 feet), and made of rigid aluminum or at minimum heavy-duty foil — plastic or thin vinyl flex duct is a fire hazard and should be replaced immediately.

The full rigid duct run inside the wall should be professionally cleaned every 1–2 years for average-use households, or annually for high-use households or long duct runs. Professional vent cleaning uses rotating brush systems and high-velocity air to clear accumulated lint from the full length of the duct — this cannot be replicated with a consumer brush kit on runs over 10 feet.

Verify airflow at the exterior termination. With the dryer running, hold your hand near the exterior vent cap — you should feel a strong, consistent airflow. Weak airflow means there's a blockage somewhere in the run.

Maintenance step 3: Check the exterior vent termination

The exterior vent cap should have a damper (flap) that opens when the dryer is running and closes when it's not. Check that the flap moves freely and isn't stuck closed (restricting airflow) or stuck open (allowing animals and weather in). Mesh screens on exterior vent caps are a fire hazard — they trap lint and should be removed or replaced with a mesh-free cap.

In winter, check for ice formation around the exterior cap. Cold exterior temperatures combined with warm humid exhaust air can create ice buildup that partially or fully blocks the vent. This is particularly common in DC-area winters with above-freezing days and below-freezing nights.

Warning signs that need immediate attention

Stop using the dryer and have it inspected if you notice:

Clothes are hot to the touch at cycle end but still damp
The laundry room or surrounding area smells burning or musty during a cycle
The dryer exterior is unusually hot
You've had a thermal fuse blow more than once
A cycle that used to take 45 minutes now takes 75+ minutes
The exterior vent cap is blowing very little air during operation
You can see or smell burning when the dryer runs
The dryer is visibly overheating or shutting off during a cycle

When to get a professional vent inspection

Schedule a professional vent cleaning and inspection if: (1) you've never had it done and the dryer is more than 2 years old; (2) you've had a thermal fuse fail — this is a direct sign of heat buildup; (3) your duct run is longer than 15 feet or has more than two 90° elbows; (4) you notice any of the warning signs listed above.

Some HVAC and appliance service companies offer vent cleaning separately from dryer repair. If you're booking a dryer repair for a slow-drying or no-heat issue, ask the technician to assess your vent path at the same visit — a blocked vent is often the root cause of the repair and will be checked as part of proper diagnosis.

Vent installation standards

If you're moving a dryer or renovating a laundry space, vent installation matters: use 4-inch rigid metal duct throughout (not plastic or foil accordion beyond the last flexible connection section); minimize run length (25-foot maximum equivalent for most dryers, per manufacturers); use smooth-interior rigid sections, not corrugated; limit elbows; terminate outside the building, never into an attic, crawl space, or interior wall.

Recessed dryer vent boxes (which allow the dryer to sit flush against the wall while accommodating the flex duct) are a worthwhile investment — they eliminate sharp bends in the flex connection that are a common lint trap and restriction point.
