Why Is My Dryer Not Heating?
A dryer that runs but produces no heat almost always has one of five causes: a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element (electric) or gas igniter/valve coil set (gas), a bad thermistor (temperature sensor), a failed cycling thermostat, or a restricted vent that tripped a safety cutoff. The most common single cause is a blown thermal fuse — a $15 part that fails when the dryer overheats, usually because the exhaust vent is blocked.
How a dryer heating system actually works
Understanding the heating circuit helps you follow the diagnosis. On an electric dryer, a 240V circuit powers a resistive heating element — essentially a coil of nichrome wire — inside the heating housing. That element cycles on and off, controlled by a cycling thermostat that reads drum-exit temperature. A high-limit thermostat acts as a backup safety switch if temperature runs too high. A thermal fuse — a one-time-use safety device — sits in line with the heating circuit and permanently opens (blows) if it ever sees temperatures above its rated limit.
On a gas dryer, the heat source is a gas burner. An igniter glows orange-hot to ignite the gas, which flows through valve coils (solenoids) that open when energized. A flame sensor confirms the flame is present. The same cycling and high-limit thermostat logic governs gas dryers, and there's still a thermal fuse in the circuit.
Any break anywhere in this circuit — mechanical or electrical — kills heat. That's why diagnosis follows the circuit systematically rather than replacing components randomly.
Cause 1: Blown thermal fuse (most common)
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows permanently when the dryer overheats. Once blown, the dryer runs — the motor and drum work fine — but there is no heat. The thermal fuse cannot be reset; it must be replaced.
Critical: a blown thermal fuse is almost always a symptom, not the root cause. The root cause is almost always a restricted exhaust vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it will blow again within weeks. Every thermal fuse replacement should include a full vent path inspection.
Cause 2: Failed heating element (electric dryers)
On electric dryers, the heating element is a resistive coil that can break or burn out over time — typically after 8–12 years of regular use, sometimes earlier if the dryer runs hot due to vent restriction. A broken element produces no heat at all; a partially broken element may produce insufficient heat.
Heating element failures are confirmed with a multimeter test (continuity check). The element should show continuity across its terminals; an open circuit means it has failed. Heating element replacement is one of the most common electric dryer repairs.
Cause 3: Gas igniter or valve coil set (gas dryers)
On gas dryers, you may hear the motor running and the drum turning, but if there's no heat, the igniter or gas valve coil set has likely failed. The igniter glows to light the burner — when it fails, no ignition, no heat. The valve coil set (typically 2–4 solenoid coils) opens the gas valve; worn coils are one of the most common gas dryer repairs on Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore platforms.
A working igniter glows orange; you can sometimes see this through the small burner window on the front panel with the dryer running in a dark room. If the igniter glows but the burner never lights, the valve coils have failed.
Cause 4: Thermistor or cycling thermostat failure
Modern dryers — particularly LG, Samsung, and Bosch — rely on a thermistor (a temperature-sensitive resistor) rather than a bimetal thermostat to regulate heat. When the thermistor fails or reads inaccurate temperatures, the control board may keep the heating circuit off entirely or cycle it erratically.
LG thermistors are one of the most common failure points on DLEX and DLG series dryers. Samsung tE1, tE2, and tE3 error codes all indicate thermistor failures. On Whirlpool, Maytag, and older platforms, a failed cycling thermostat produces the same symptom — no heat or inconsistent heat.
Cause 5: Restricted airflow (root cause of most thermal fuse failures)
A dryer's heating system depends on moving air. The heating element (or burner) heats air; that air moves through the drum, carrying moisture out through the exhaust vent. If the vent is restricted — clogged with lint, kinked, or capped with a vent cover that doesn't open fully — heat builds up, temperature sensors and safety devices trip, and the dryer shuts off heat to protect itself.
Signs of a vent restriction: clothes take 2–3 cycles to dry, the dryer exterior is unusually hot, you notice a burning smell, or the laundry room feels humid during a cycle. LG's flow-sense codes (d80, d90, d95) directly report vent restriction severity.
